Canon Pixma MP490 Series - If you buy an entry-level all-in-one, you may wish the spec is much lower than when bought in the mid or high price ranges, but in most cases the core functions, such as printing and scanning, would be the same from machine to machine and it's just a different set of features. The PIXMA MP490 is one of these.

During launch day Canon has reduced the size of the engine, so they look less like harmoniums and more like oversize jewelry box. PIXMA MP490 cased in high-gloss shades of gray and black and looks very smart, too, when it is closed.

Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner is a single sheet, but quiet and quick to use and produces surprisingly good images. It is also used in the process of automatic printhead alignment, to scan the print test again.

Pull the paper tray supporters from behind and open the front cover, which is the output tray, and it does look pretty neat, but it's still very practical. There is no separate paper tray under the machine, but the rear tray works for plain and photo paper.

Flip over to the control panel, which is to the right of the scanner cover, and you will find it is equipped with an LCD screen of 45 mm. This is a small unit that is bright, good enough for the photo thumbnails and displays menus and status messages – its main function. The Control Panel looks very similar to those on larger engines the brothers, except that ' ring ' four-way switch control and not the click-wheel.
