Canon Pixma MG8220 Series - There are at least two contexts for judging the Canon Pixma MG8220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One. First, as big brother to the Canon Pixma MG6220 that I recently reviewed, it offers essentially identical capabilities except that it adds the ability to scan 35mm slides and strips of film. Second, it's Canon's latest high-end home photo lab, meaning that it can print high-quality photos from so many different sources that you can reasonably use it just for photos without ever connecting to a computer. Either way, it's impressive enough to be the new Editors' Choice for high-end photocentric MFP.
Canon Pixma MG8220 shares all of the key features of the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma MG8120 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer. Canon Pixma MG8120 that it's replacing in Canon's line (although the MG8120 is still available at this writing). It prints, scans, and copies; extends the scan feature to include 35mm film (defined here as both slides and strips of film); and it expands the copy feature to let you print photos directly from film. In addition, it can print from a long list of other sources, starting with the usual: memory cards, USB memory keys, and PictBridge cameras.
Less common options include both Photo Copy and Advanced Photo copy commands on the front panel that let you print high-quality copies of photographic prints. (There's also a standard Copy command for documents.) The front panel even offers an Online Album Print option, with choices for Canon Image Gateway and Picasa Web Albums. And as you would probably expect, you can preview photos on the printer's 3.5-inch LCD before printing.
Pixma MG8220 offers both wired & WiFi connections as well as USB. For my tests, I connected with the Ethernet port and installed the driver on a Windows Vista system. Installation was standard fare.
Not too surprisingly for a printer that focuses on photos, the MG8220's speed on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware & software for timing) wasn't particularly impressive.

I timed it at an effective 2.9 pages per minute (ppm), which makes it essentially tied with the far less expensive Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 as well as both the MG6220 and MG8120. It's also far slower than many other printers in its price range and below. The Epson Artisan 835 (direct, 4 stars), for example, came in at 5.2 ppm.
