Canon Pixma iP100 is an upgrade from iP90v last year. For this product, Canon increases the amount of ink nozzles and doubling the maximum resolution to 4, 800 x 1, 200 dpi color. As a result, we've seen a hefty improvement in speed as well as quality printing that makes portable iP100 printer competitive with even a few full size. You don't get some of the bells and whistles such as Hewlett Packard mobile companion multimedia card reader/optional Wi-Fi connectivity. Even still, we prefer the Canon is a lower profile, fast print speeds, an upgrade set cartridge and overall flexibility.

We like the design continuity on the line as well as a simple aesthetic Pixma mobile provides. Canon Pixma IP100 looks nearly identical to its predecessor, iP90v. The body has a matte-silver finish with black glazed side panels and paper handling trays that extend out from the device. Thankfully, the input tray holds 50 sheets of paper, 20 pages jump from iP90v. The right side of the printer has an infrared port for connecting to a mobile phone compatible with 1.1 IrMC, port USB 2.0 and PictBridge port for direct printing from compatible digicams. Canon will throw in BU-30 Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a USB port, allowing you to print via wireless from laptop/mobile devices. However, the Canon Pixma iP100 lacks a built-in card reader included in the HP H470; the user is forced to print via USB/PictBridge port. There is also Wi-Fi without the adapter currently available for iP100, so if these features are absolute must-haves, HP Deskjet 460c might be a better choice.

2.4 inches high, 12.7 inches wide, and an inch deep, 7.2 Canon Pixma iP100 is actually a little larger and heavier than last year's model, but still maintains a smaller profile than its direct competitor, the HP Officejet H470. From the point of view of portability, Pixma iP100 easily transportable, but it would be great if Canon has included the bag to protect the units in transit.

While the iP100 makes the same physical profile as its predecessor, the internal cartridge system actually were changed. First, the Canon Pixma iP100 bump up the total number of Nozzle from 1,088 to 1.856. Compare that to nozzles in 1,072 H470 and you will see why Canon is more than a full model of the future of HP in this competitive space. PIXMA IP100 using Canon's newest ChromoLife color ink; each cartridge and reportedly produces 249 pages. Like the iP90 iP90v and before, the user is able to lend economic life cycle of their cartridges using two options built into the drivers: Save black ink or using composite mode. Save black ink reduces the amount of black ink that is used in text and graphical mode, while the grayscale composite used produces a color spectrum of pseudo black remaining after Black ink ran out.
